In early April 2009, Jan and Dave Griffiths from Mackay in Queensland came to HMMG for some urgent help with a sudden onslaught of domestic and international media interest on their doorstep.

At the centre of all the attention was their blue cattle dog Sophie Tucker, lost overboard in choppy seas off Mackay 4 months earlier, the dog had swum to a nearby island and survived. A heart warming reunion unfolded on the Mackay docks after the family heard the Rangers had trapped a wild dog that was hunting baby goats on one of the islands.

The story of Sophie Tucker’s survival touched the hearts of people around the world.

HMMG collaborated with a US co-agent and began to work on the film and book interest and shortly after a major animation studio optioned the rights to the story which remains in development. The book Sophie, Dog Overboard: The Incredible True Adventures of the Castaway Dog written by EmmaPearse has been published by Hodder Stoughton out of the UK and released last week in Australia. An extract from the book was recently featured in The Weekend Australian. The US version of the book will be published in early 2012.
