Ita Buttrose is to be honoured by the Friends of the National Library to commemorate her long standing contribution to the Australian publishing world on Sunday 15 November 2009. The Friends of the National Library have said “It is a privilege to celebrate the work of Ita Buttrose AO, OBE, and her contribution to the Australian publishing industry. There is no doubt that her work as a journalist, editor and author has made Ita a household name. Her outstanding success in the business world has made her a role model for several generations of Australian women.”
In an interview regarding her career with Canberra journalist Sally Prior regarding the award, Ita stated, considering the current industry “In recent times, there have been a few stories running in some of the women’s magazines, they’re clearly untrue, and you think, good god! What is going on in the minds of the people who are putting these magazines out?” When asked how she would run a magazine differently these days, Ita replies mischievously “I know exactly where the gap is. I know what people are looking to read, and I think I’ve got an idea. I know exactly what I’d do, but as it’s a very competitive market, I have no intention of saying!”
