On 17 August 1980, Lindy Chamberlain's daughter, nine week old Azaria Chamberlain was taken by a dingo from a camping ground near Ayers Rock. Lindy was tried and convicted of the murder of her baby daughter. She was sentenced to life in prison with hard labour until 1987 when the commission found her innocent and revealed that a jury would not have convicted if the new evidence had been available. A third inquest was held and on December 13, 1995 Northern Territory Coroner John Lowndes once again cleared Lindy of all convictions although the 107 page decision could not determine the cause and manner of the disappearance and presumed death of Azaria.
Lindy's autobiography Through My Eyes was published in 1990 and reprinted in 2004. In 1988 the movie of John Bryson's book on the extraordinary Chamberlain story, Evil Angels was released starring Meryl Streep.
There is still enormous media interest in Lindy and her life. She is an intelligent and articulate person who speaks publicly on a variety of topics including privacy and the media's responsibilities in news reporting, lawyer's responsibilities to seek the truth and be impartial and prison life, what it is really like inside and how it differs from the public's perception.
